Trench Control Helping Tall Ships Berth in Waterford
NAAS, IRELAND, (May 27th, 2011) – Trench Control, the leading piling contractor and supplier of ground support equipment for hire, is working with Carrillion Irish Enco to install new berths for the arrival of the Tall Ships at the end of June.
The Project
Carillion Irish Enco had won the contract to prepare new berths for the tall ships arriving at the end of June. Part of the project required the removal of old wooden piles that were 14 meters in length and 400mm square. These piles were what remained of the old berths and were unsafe.
The second phase of the project required the installation of 16-18 meter H Beams driven into the river bed to secure the berths to the Quay. There was a total of 40 H-Beams to be installed.
The Solution
One of the first issues to be raised was the method of removing the existing wooden piles. These piles had begun to rot and an initial attempt to remove them using a crane with in excess of 11 tonne of line pull was unsuccessfull. Trench Control review the piles and determined that a clamp system could be fabricated that would grab the wooden piles on all four sides and ensure a high line pull could be utilized to free the wooden piles from the river bed.
Within two days, Trench Control had designed and tested a new clamp system that utilised a pile breaker and a crane mounted vibrating hammer. This proved very successful and all the wooden piles were removed with 24 hours.
The second phase of installing the H-Beams proceeded very quickly and the finished supports for the berths were completed in record time.
