Siac use Innovative WaterDam on River Boyne

Trench Control, a leading piling and anchoring contractor and supplier of trench support equipment for hire, is pleased to announce its first installation of the water inflated coffer dam, ‘WaterDam' in County Meath.

The image shows the final barrier in place prior to dewatering of the internal area. The barrier was installed across the river Boyne to provide a safe working environment for Siac Construction as they installed a diffuser pipe from the new Wastewater Treatment Plant in Donore to the River Boyne.

Due to environmental concerns regarding possible damage to the river bed along the Boyne and the aquatic life within the river, a traditional steel cofferdam could not be used. After extensive discussions between the Eastern Fisheries Board, Siac and Trench Control, the WaterDam system was agreed as the only solution that would meet the key objectives of safety without permanent damage to the river Boyne.

The barrier is design to hold back up to 1.8m of water and is used when steel sheet piles cannot be driven due to ground conditions, lack of access or when it would cause permanent damage to the environment.

Installation
The solution for the river Boyne was to provide a tee-pee design with two sides of a triangle attached to the river bank. This would enable the internal area of the tee-pee to be protected against the flow of water from the River Boyne while installation of a pipe diffuser took place. Installation was completed in one day.

The installation process was very simple. The most difficult part was access to the site through a small laneway. This was achieved using a fork lift to site where the excavator was waiting. Once on site the small excavator was use to position the WaterDam on the river bank and as it was filled with water it was dropped into position.

Once the initial section was in place Trench Control reviewed the stability of the barrier and set up the line for the next section of the barrier.

The second section is layered over the first section and held in position using the excavator. Once the line is correct it is filled with the water from the river using a pump and after 30 minutes the second section is in place and secure.

At this point the WaterDam is so heavy that it is sitting on the river bed forming a dam that diverts the river current away from the site. Final checks are made to backfill any small gaps where the aqua barrier meets the river bank and dewatering can begin.

Project – Donore Wastewater Treatment Plant
Donore village was being served by an existing Waste Water Treatment Plant located to the north-west of the Village, along the Slane/Stalleen Road. The system was operating at capacity which had been identified as being 600p.e. (population equivalent). An upgrade of this facility was deemed necessary and EPS and Siac Construction are currently undertaking this work which is substantially complete. The final facility will be completed in Spring 2010 and this upgrade will increase the unit’s capacity to 1,200p.e.
