Trench Control Completes Contract at Warrenpoint Harbour, Co.Down
Trench Control, a leading piling and anchoring contractor and supplier of ground support equipment for hire, is pleased to announce successful completion of the sheet piling contract for the Warrenpoint Harbour Extension in County Down on behalf of the main contractor, Farrans Construction.
The contract was for the installation of a combi-wall to support the replacement of the 30-year old single-tier Ro-Ro ramp with a two-tier linkspan and the deepening of the berths 4 & 5 to 7.5m at low tide in order to enable the port to handle larger deep-water vessels.
Trench Control Solution
Trench Control was engaged as the main sub-contractor for all piling and anchoring works. The piling was 22 meter sheet piles and 22m tubular piles to form a combi-wall to create a foundation for the new quays and to protect the old quay face from subsiding.
Trench Control installed 117 double Steel Sheet Piles & 117 Tubular Piles, all 22 meters in length, using the Trench Control 17/22 Leader Rig. In addition Trench Control fabricated a piling gate to ensure that when working over water, the sheets and tubes would be installed vertical to the existing quay wall.
The work was carried out over a six (6) week period, with the driving of the sheet piles only permitted during daylight hours in 20 minute bursts to avoid undue disruption to local residents.
As part of the service, Trench Control provided detailed design advice to cover all aspects of the piling and anchoring to ensure the combi wall was sufficient to retain the existing structures and provide a safe environment for the future extension of the berths.
Already having worked with Farrans Construction on the Joint Venture with Grahams at the Belfast M3 infrastructure project, the new contract is a testament to the ability of Trench Control to deliver on time and on budget.
The work at Warrenpoint will be supported from the new Trench Control depot which is ideally based in Hillsborough, Co.Down close to the major road networks which allow for ease of access throughout the province.
Project Summary
The Warrenpoint Harbour Authority is investing in excess of £20m in the upgrade of facilities, in order to enable the port to handle larger deep-water vessels. The existing berths 4 and 5 along the main quays are being deepened to accommodate larger vessels and to deliver a more efficient service to support the local economy.
The creation of a deep water quay at Warrenpoint will enable goods to be transported in a smaller number of larger, more modern and fuel-efficient vessels. This investment will also secure the competitiveness of the port and its continuation as a key transportation gateway into the region, thereby providing a viable alternative to more distant ports for the transport of goods. In these ways, the enhanced facilities at Warrenpoint will reduce the carbon footprint associated with the movement of goods.
This investment is part of the £20M programme announced by WHA in 2007 and is supported by a £15M grant from the Department for Regional Development. The upgrade of facilities at Warrenpoint will secure the jobs of over 200 people who work both directly or indirectly at the Harbour.
